Alberta wants mountains, not roses, on licence plates

EDMONTON - In Albertans' hearts, the towering Rocky Mountains crushed the wild rose as the new symbol they want on the provincial licence plates.
The Conservative government will come out with a new Alberta plate design next year that will be dominated by a mountain vista, following surveys of more than 34,000 residents.
The public was, however, split on whether the motto 'Strong and Free' should replace the province's longstanding slogan 'Wild Rose Country.' The Tories' 72 MLAs will decide on final design, colour and slogan, Service Alberta Minister Heather Klimchuk said.
This is the first time in a quarter-century that Alberta's iconic plates will be changed - a move made necessary because the booming province will run out of new number-letter combinations on the existing licences.
The government will not reintroduce the front plates, which survey respondents overwhelmingly opposed.
The rollout of the new plates in 2009 and 2010 will cost taxpayers $11.7 million.
New design and printing technologies will let the province feature a full-colour image on the new plates - and it might incorporate mountains, symbolic flowers and any variety of other elements, Klimchuk told reporters.
The province will also consider offering custom designs with the images of certain sports teams or other organization, Klimchuk said.
'Practically, it looks like a painting on the licence plate,' the minister said. 'You can do incredible things on licence plates now, which is why this is a wonderful opportunity right now. So as far as I'm concerned, the sky is the limit.'

The government got 33,420 responses to its online consultation - mostly men, and more from Calgary than from any of the other big cities combined.
'Strong and Free' was the preferred plate message for 46 per cent of Internet respondents, and Wild Rose Country was the pick of 35 per cent.
A separate telephone poll of 1,000 Albertans showed that 74 per cent of Albertans like the existing slogan.
Strong and Free (in Latin, 'fortis et liber') is Alberta's official motto. The wild rose is its official flower.
Some government officials are privately worried that 'Strong and Free' sounds too aggressive or American, although it is part of Canada's national anthem.
