Garageband Instrument Library

Posted on  by

Jan 10, 2018 In GarageBand for iOS 2.3, use the Sound Library to download additional free sound packs to use in your songs. Sound packs contain individual or combinations of Touch Instruments, Apple Loops, Live Loops templates, and guitar and instrument presets. But beyond GarageBand’s instruments, the universe of software instruments is vast, with prices that range from $500 or more for a single instrument to completely free for entire collections. Garageband Instruments free download - Apple GarageBand, Pro Pack For GarageBand, Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller, and many more programs.

GarageBand is looking for the Instrument Library in the folder

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/

and for the loops in the folder /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/

The system is creating them on the internal drive, and you cannot simply move these folders and redirect GarageBand to use the moved versions on the external drive.

There are two approaches to circumvent these.

  1. You can install sounds and loops in the library folder in your user home folder as well. Install them in the Library folder in your home folder. This will only help, if you relocate the complete home folder of your user account to the external drive. You can do that from the System preferences > Users&Groups. But that would require to have always the external drive connected, before you even log in - not really convenient on a portable Mac. It would work well on an iMac or Mac mini however. 2. You can try to cheat GarageBand by replacing the folders /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/ and Library/Audio/Apple Loops/ by symbolic links to folders on your external hard drive. This used to work well in earlier system versions. I have never tried it on El Capitan, so I cannot guarantee if it will work. The procedure is described here for Logic Pro, it would be similar for GarageBand: https://music.tutsplus.com/articles/how-and-why-to-move-your-logic-pro-x-sound-l ibraries-to-an-external-drive--audio-195…
